STAR TREK: BEYOND

If you guys didn’t catch the opening of Star Trek: Beyond this past weekend, I highly suggest you take that ‘special someone,’ a friend, or co-worker with you to go see this fantastic Blockbuster smash ASAP! Might I be a little biased because my husband executive produced the film? Perhaps….but seeing as how the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the original Star Wars trilogy and the Back to the Future trilogy are all at the top of my list for all-time favorite movies, I’m definitely critical of the epic Sci-Fi and Fantasy films…and this is one I definitely recommend seeing—even if you’re not familiar with the Star Trek series or films. JJ Abrams, who directed the first two films in this rebooted Star Trek series, passed the torch off to produce this time around and let Justin Lin (Fast and Furious films) run with it. I thought all of the action scenes in Space, on the different planets, and the Yorktown starbase kept you hanging off the edge of your seat and cheering on a win for the ‘good guys’, just as you’d hope they would. I also love that the characters, now part-way through their five year mission on the Enterprise all have a familiarity and rapport with one another—this leads to many small comedic character

moments that occur throughout the film as well as lends itself to many moments where the characters seem to instinctively know how to interact with one another when fighting against their enemies. It’s that great feeling of “the gang is back together” in characters such as James T. Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto) and Bones (Karl Urban) as well as Uhura (Zoe Saldana), Scotty (Simon Pegg), Sulu (John Cho) and Chekov (Anton Yelchin—may he RIP). They’ve all definitely found their groove as shipmates, which creates some irony and conflict in the storyline when Captain Kirk and Spock reveal the future plans they have for themselves in this film. And while some of the characters may be motivated to take different paths once they’re past this battle, they still all act together and take stock in how well they work together as a team. One character that really stood out for me in “Beyond” was just introduced in this third film of the series. Jayla, played by actress Sofia Boutella is a strong, fierce, and vulnerable character with many tricks up her sleeve that help the stranded Enterprise crew after they are attacked by the evil, Krall (Idris Elba). Without giving so much away about the plot of the movie and the outcome between The Enterprise crew and the villain…and because I am not a film expert or writer….just a fan of good, entertaining films….I will leave you with the above, and just say….GO SEE IT, in theaters TODAY!!! Live long and prosper!!
